Twenty Years of Growth

This Riverton, Utah, building was Young Living Essential Oil’s home for a short while.

How many can remember this building in Riverton, Utah? Before Mary and I were married, I was in Phoenix, Arizona, with Vonn, doing a meeting. As I got ready to leave, I got on the plane and called Mary and said, “Could you find a realtor who could meet me at the airport and take me to look for a building, because I’m going to move Young Living from Washington to Utah.”

So she picked me up at the airport, met me at the realtor’s office, and we went out and looked at this building. We walked through it with a flashlight because it was dark and at night, and I had to get back on the plane and go to Spokane the next morning. It was unbelievably filthy. It had been empty for one or two years, maybe longer.

The representative for the building was in Moscow, Russia; and we called him at 3 o’clock in the morning and made the deal overnight. Mary said, “You don’t really want to go out there, do you? That’s on the other side of the tracks.”

I said, “What do you mean?”

She said, “That is just so far out there.

I said, “That’s all I can afford right now. But this is just a temporary stopping spot; that’s all it is.”

We moved into this building and I bought it for $89,000. I subdivided off an acre and sold it to a shopping center for $250,000 a year later. A year later I sold the building and the other acre for another $158,000. So it was from the sale of that that helped me purchase the first 160-acre farm down at Mona and put us into the building that we purchased in Payson. It was all leveraged, every part of it.
